About

GYROtechie is a husband and wife team. Here’s our story:

In the latter half of the 1990s, we were attending the same university and were both enrolled as Computer Science majors and Mathematics minors. We also were both working as lab assistants in the university’s computer labs. Through countless hours of running into each other, studying together and working on programming assignments together, a deep friendship emerged. The friendship grew into a dating relationship and then into a marriage a year and a half later.

After graduation we were both hired as software engineers for a large insurance and financial services company in San Antonio. One and a half years later, Shannon left that company to pursue a freelance opportunity. I stayed and moved from a quality assurance position to performance engineering and then to development over the next several years. During this time we worked on a few freelance projects together in our spare time. As we started a family, Shannon resigned from her freelance job to stay at home with our children. While the kids took a good bit of her time, she continued to assist me with my freelance jobs or by letting me talk through a problem I ran into at my full-time job.

In February of 2006, I left my full time position and pursued independent freelancing full time. We took advantage of this new flexibility to move our family to Fort Worth, TX. During a slow period in between projects and with the arrival of a third child, I sought out a 6 month contract with a local Internet printing company to help fill the gap. Once on board I ended up staying for over a year and a half.

In late 2007 we decided to rededicate ourselves to our own company and work together more formally as a team. We re-branding ourselves as GYROtechie and began preparations for a new phase. In 2008, I ended his contract with the printing company and we began our efforts together full time instead of on the side. We love having the opportunity to work as a team again. If we sound like a bit of a nerdy couple, I suppose that’s because we are; and proud of it.
